2. Place the egg, the yolk, the maple syrup, the vanilla, and the salt in a blender jar. Cover and blend until thoroughly mixed with no unincorporated streaks of egg white. Remove the lid (or the center insert if there is one) and, with the motor running, slowly pour in the warm milk mixture. Blend for a minute or so, until frothy on top. (If you don’t have a blender, whisk the egg mixture thoroughly, then slowly pour in the milk mixture, whisking continually until completely blended.)

3. Pour the custard into a shallow dish large enough to fit a slice of bread. If the mixture has a layer of froth on top, stir it into the custard. Otherwise your first piece of bread won’t absorb enough liquid.
